With the rise of more Afrobeats Stars like DJ Cuppy and Dotman means the future is definitely bright for the Africa music scene. These ‘funky party sounds’ emanating from Africa are providing an injection of new energy into UK urban and US hip-hop making the desire for them insatiable especially in the West. Most of them first relesased songs on ITunes and YouTube where the absence of a label isn’t necessarily a set back allowing them to gain an audience and spread the sound.įor years, African music has had amazing hiplife, highlife amd Naijabeats for example, but this Afrobeats sound is different, it’s intertwined with things like hip-hop and funky house, and there’s more of a young feel to it. The rise of alternative media and seeming liberalisation of the Music Industry has allowed these formerly unknown musical artistes to ture into world famous stars taking Afrobeats to the world. However, this is only partially true as Artistes from DR Congo and Tanzania like Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platinumz respectively have made an immense contribution to this new dawn for African Music. Many say the Nigerian and Ghanaian music industries, are the facilitators of this proliferation of African sounds around the world. With very popular songs on Spotify, ITunes and YouTube with view counts often exceeding the 30 million mark on some songs, the profile of African Artistes like Mr Eazi, Davido, Sarkodie, Shatta Wale and Yemi Alade (to name a few) has definitely risen, exporting the vast Afrobeats landscape to a global audience never before seen in the history of African Music.
